What Is STIR/SHAKEN
& Why Do You Need It?
Caller ID authentication built to strengthen trust across the U.S. voice network.
Protecting Caller Identity & Network Trust
STIR/SHAKEN is the caller ID authentication framework used across U.S. IP-based voice networks. It uses digital certificates and cryptographic call-signing technology to help verify the identity associated with an originating call.
Proper implementation helps receiving carriers evaluate whether caller ID information can be trusted and provides an important defense against spoofing and illegal robocall activity.
Voice service providers must understand their applicable authentication and robocall mitigation obligations and maintain the registrations, certificates and processes required for their operations.
STIR/SHAKEN Attestation Levels Explained
Attestation communicates what the originating provider knows about the caller and their authorization to use the calling number.
Full Attestation
The provider has authenticated the customer and established that the customer is authorized to use the calling number.
Partial Attestation
The provider has authenticated the customer but cannot establish that the customer is authorized to use the calling number.
Gateway Attestation
The provider has authenticated where the call entered its network but does not have a verified relationship with the originating caller.
